I sleep on my side.
For some reason, it is sleeping on the left side that makes the difference, but not your right.
That doesn't sound right, but I'll try it.
They also suggest sleeping with your upper body elevated if you're having bad reflux and heartburn.
On my side at an angle is a guarantee to slide out of bed.
It is more like two pillows under your head instead of one, not feats of endurance.
Yeah, that's labor.
In your second trimester, the baby starts to weigh so much it can press on the blood vessels in your back and cut off circulation to the legs.
That's the vena cava. As if I need it even harder to get out of bed, losing feeling in my legs becomes another one.
When you've reached that point, you need to be sleeping on your side so that blood flow for your body isn't affected.
It feels like everything else is drained.
When you are past the first trimester, trying to sleep on your stomach becomes almost impossible.
I feel like a beached whale if I try it now. That's why I wanted to know if I could sleep on my back.
The best position when you can't sleep on your stomach comfortably anymore is your side.
And whichever side I'm more comfortable with.
You can improve the comfort of it with a body pillow. There are ones that support the belly so you don't feel like a lopsided load that almost pulls you from your side to face planted in the pillow.
It seems like nothing is comfortable.
In your second and third trimester, sleeping on your side is both the most comfortable and the safest.
And you said sleep on the left side if I have indigestion.
Sleeping on the left side is good for circulation too, so it is best for you in most cases.
The kid is certainly making it uncomfortable for me to sleep, but losing circulation to my lower body makes it hard to get up.
In rare cases, it reduces blood flow to the baby too.
All this tossing and turning and careful positioning to sleep a couple hours before getting up to pee.
Consider it practice for those multiple late night feedings.
I need to get to that point first.
Then know you can sleep on your back until it starts to cause as much back pain laying down as standing up all day, then switch to your side, whichever is more comfortable.
And know that it will only get harder before it becomes impossible for the next year or two, starting with an all night marathon of labor.
