MUMBAI: Fed up of the increasing pressure for Caesareans at city maternity homes, a Kandivali-based couple, on Sunday, chose to deliver their child at home.
Vrinda Natesh, 28, gave birth to her fourth baby girl with the help of a retired nurse from Kerala without any complications.
Vrinda and her husband Natesh, who live in Thakur village, Kandivli, said they were being pressurised by gynaecologists to undergo a Caesarean just two days after her due date of November 21.
Natesh, an astrologer, told TNN that he was very suspicious of the doctors, as they seemed too eager to go for a Caesarean operation. They claimed the baby was weighing 4.7 kg and that she had become too heavy to be delivered normally, he said.
An obstetrician who charges Rs 6,000 for a normal delivery can slap a fee of Rs 20,000 for a Caesarean. Defying the doctors’ orders, the couple made arrangements to have their baby at home. Eleven days past the due date, Vrinda delivered the baby weighing 4 kg.
We did not induce labour but chose to wait, Natesh said. While two of her children were born normally, one was delivered by C-section. During the second delivery in 1996 we were forced to undergo an operation as the doctor claimed the baby was in a breach position (legs first),said Natesh.
For the fourth delivery, the couple did not even have a doctor around but allowed their children to witness the process. The baby came out smoothly after 12 hours of labour at 12.15 p.m. on Sunday. Though doctors had suggested Natesh to keep an ambulance as a standby for an emergency, he refused.
However, Natesh was prepared to take his wife to Nanavati hospital in case of complications. An elated Natesh feels other young couples should not follow doctors blindly. We should question them. In the United States, Caesarean is undertaken as a last option but here it is done at the drop of a hat,he noted.
